Who Is BDP?
After recently landing the front cover for the 4th Issue of a London and New York grunge culture magazine, Off The Rails, Los Angeles based film Photographer BDP takes his time to answer some of our questions. Though an LA migrant for the past two years, BDP is originally from Buffalo, New York. He holds a BFA in Photography and has been photographing for the past eight years.
"I mainly shoot film, mostly medium format. Right now I’m really into color, natural light, and exploring new locations. I’m still experimenting with the medium and learning as I go. I go out almost every day with my cameras to document my surroundings. The images below were all taken within the past year."
We asked what his main artistic influences are, for his work seems to posses an air of silence and nostalgic melancholia. It is as if one is reminded by a vague and distant memory. BDP particularly enjoys photographing female nudes and street scenes, though he is still searching for a creative direction as a photographer. He tells Dion that his work is largely influenced by artists like Stephen Shore, surrealist photographer Ralph Gibson, Julian Schnabel, and Edward Hopper, while also suggesting the importance of music on his art.
"Right now, the style of my work is still forming and I think it always will be. I don’t necessarily think I have a particular style that I could pinpoint, but I am interested in isolating mundane happenings and recording my personal experiences. I want to take pictures that feel natural and give the viewer the sense of seeing."
The guys at Dion are frothing over is shoot for Off The Rails magazine, so make sure you pick up a copy when you get the chance. He has also recently done an incredible series for C-Heads which you can view here.
